When to Trim Palm Trees in Florida (and How Not to Kill Them)

Palms are the signature tree of Tampa Bay, and also the most often over-trimmed. Trimming at the right time and the right amount keeps them healthy and storm-ready.

Best time to trim palms in Tampa Bay

Late spring (April–June), before peak hurricane season, is ideal for removing dead fronds and heavy seed pods that can become projectiles in high winds. Many homeowners schedule a second light trim in fall after flowering.

Only remove fully brown fronds

Green and even yellowing fronds still feed the palm with nutrients like potassium. Cutting them causes nutrient deficiency, “pencil-necking” of the trunk and, eventually, a dead tree. A good rule: never cut above the 9 o’clock – 3 o’clock line.

Why we never use “hurricane cuts”

Stripping palms down to a few fronds doesn’t make them safer in storms. It weakens them. Healthy, full canopies actually flex better in wind.
